Barley Now Insurable in Ohio

Thinking about planting Barley this year? We’ve got you covered. All you need to know about barley insurance

Barley coverage is available without a written agreement in the following Ohio counties starting in 2020: Allen, Butler, Champaign, Columbiana, Crawford, Darke, Defiance, Delaware, Erie, Fairfield, Fayette, Fulton, Hancock, Hardin, Henry, Knox, Licking, Lorain, Lucas, Madison, Mahoning, Marion, Miami, Ottawa, Pickaway, Preble, Putnam, Ross, Sundusky, Shelby, Trumble, Union, Wayne, Wood, Wyandot. If you are not planting your barley in one of these counties, you can still request coverage by completing a written agreement before the sales closing date (9/30).

A barley contract will be required to insure the crop. Once you have your contract, you can insure up to 85% coverage on an individual yield or revenue policy. Yield policies guarantees are based on a producer’s yield history (if you are new to barley and do not have one, you will be provided with the starting yield for your county). Any yield losses are paid at the contract price. Revenue policy guarantees are based on a producer’s yield history and the higher of the factored July corn futures market price. This allows the coverage to take market fluctuations into consideration when calculating losses.

If you are planting Malting Barley, an endorsement can be added to your policy to provide additional quality protection and updated Malting Barley Prices in accordance with your contracts.
